Sapporo Snow
December 2018
This was my first trip away on my own. I landed in 札幌 (Sapporo) in the middle of winter, bundled in layers, with a camera I was only just learning to use. Everything felt foreign: the language on the signs, the soft crunch of snow underfoot, the way the whole city seemed to move a little slower in the cold.
Standing at an intersection on 大通 (Odori), with snow falling thick and quiet around me, I watched a white taxi glide through the crossing. I lifted the camera, pressed the shutter, and didn't think much of it at the time.
Looking back, it was the beginning of everything. My first solo trip, my first real attempt at photography, and a kind of freedom I hadn't felt before, cold and unfamiliar and completely my own. Of every frame I've taken since, this is still the one I treasure most.
Where it all began. Ryan
