Sapporo Snow

December 2018

This was my first trip away on my own. I landed in 札幌 (Sapporo) in the middle of winter, bundled in layers, with a camera I was only just learning to use. Everything felt foreign: the language on the signs, the soft crunch of snow underfoot, the way the whole city seemed to move a little slower in the cold.

Standing at an intersection on 大通 (Odori), with snow falling thick and quiet around me, I watched a white taxi glide through the crossing. I lifted the camera, pressed the shutter, and didn't think much of it at the time.

Looking back, it was the beginning of everything. My first solo trip, my first real attempt at photography, and a kind of freedom I hadn't felt before, cold and unfamiliar and completely my own. Of every frame I've taken since, this is still the one I treasure most.

Where it all began. Ryan

The Gate in the Lake

October 2024

On this crisp autumn morning, a feeling of spontaneity stirred within me. I hired a car before sunrise and set off on a quiet drive around 琵琶湖 (Lake Biwa), watching as the soft light of dawn gently revealed the lake's endless waters. The air was cool, with the scent of salt drifting through the breeze, and for hours, it felt like the world belonged only to me: just winding roads, sleepy towns, and golden reflections on the water. Five hours passed and I reached my final destination, a serene temple, 毘沙門堂門跡, tucked high in the hills surrounding Kyoto.

The Sea Wall

May 2026

While the other two rested at home, I set off on foot to discover a little more of 苫小牧 (Tomakomai), a peaceful town on Hokkaido's coast. The breeze was crisp and gentle, and the smell of the ocean reached me long before the water did. うみだ! (It's the sea!)

At the end of the sea wall, a man stood with his hands in his pockets, peering out over the water. His bicycle waited behind him, as if it had nowhere else to be. I watched him from behind and felt it too: that easy, unhurried calm of being exactly where you want to be.

I didn't say a word. I just stood there a while longer, happy to be there.

Happy, simply to be there. Ryan

Paper Parasol

April 2026

We spent the day dressed in kimono, walking slowly, the only pace a kimono really allows. The fabric was heavier than I expected, the sandals louder on the stone, and the city seemed to slow down to match us.

Along one quiet lane we came across more people dressed the same way, drifting between old wooden houses under the midday sun. One woman walked ahead of us beneath a white paper parasol, her kimono patterned with pale flowers, her shadow pooling neatly at her feet.

For a moment it felt like we had all agreed to step out of the present together, strangers sharing the same small piece of another time.

For a day, we borrowed another time. Ryan

Paper Umbrellas

October 2024

As I wandered through the temple grounds, camera in hand, I stumbled upon a beautiful scene: a young Japanese couple with their mothers, delicately arranging themselves for their engagement photos. The couple caught my eye, her shy smile as she adjusted the folds of her traditional kimono and her groom standing close by, watching her with quiet admiration. The rustling of leaves and the soft hum of distant bells filled the air, amplifying the stillness of the moment.

It felt like I had been given a glimpse into something private and precious, a reminder of how fleeting and beautiful these quiet moments can be. I lingered for a while longer, savoring the warmth of the scene, before walking away with the feeling that this unexpected detour had offered me far more than I'd imagined.

In the quiet, we find the most beautiful stories. Ryan

Red Maple

November 2024

On the final day of my trip to Japan in 2024, I found myself wandering from a random station toward 服部緑地, a quiet park tucked away from the rush of the city. Along the way, I stumbled upon カメラのサンエ, a tiny photo printing shop that felt like a time capsule. I bought a roll of Kodak Gold 200 for an absurd $50 and smiled at the small indulgence.

At the park, I sat on a bench and let the scene unfold around me. The air was filled with soft conversations and the comforting hum of a nearby Starbucks. Families shared picnics under the trees, while children ran carefree across the grass. Not a single tourist in sight, just life, happening as it always had.

“Japan,” I thought to myself, soaking it all in.

It was a moment that felt beautifully ordinary yet quietly profound, a perfect farewell.

A memoir to my twenties. Ryan
